Magically travel back in time for one weekend in May

11th Mar 2015

Have you ever wished that just once you could take your family back through history to a time of beautiful princesses and ladies-in-waiting, powerful kings and handsome knights? Wouldn’t you just love to see your children regaled by medieval storytellers instead of being glued to iPads, surrounded by stunning costumes rather than trashy Hollywood-style clothing, and enjoying genuine entertainment where folks actually interact with one another and revelled in perfecting their craft?-5906508650D677A1B

Well, you finally have your wish if you live in or can get to the Adelaide metropolitan area for the weekend of 2nd and 3rd of May 2015. For on that magical weekend, the Adelaide Hills town of Gumeracha will be transformed as it hosts the 9th annual Gumeracha Medieval Fair.

As parents of three adult children and grandparents to eight little ones, we are often looking for somewhere to go which suits all ages, and this fairy-tale weekend certainly fits the bill.

Last year we took some o3702827163F5F1AA5 (3)f our grandchildren along and they had an absolute ball. We are told this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever before; we think it will be the most exciting and action-packed weekend of the year! Held in Federation Park from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday, you too can join in the enchanted fun and get your wish of travelling back in time, if only for a few enthralling hours.

Just some of the many forms of entertainment being planned for this year include:

  • Face painting for all the little ones
  • Entertaining storytellers
  • A children’s costume-maker
  • The King’s Horses Equestrian Group showing off their skill with all forms of medieval arms
  • A native animal nursery
  • Actual combat (well, re-enactments!) as strong knights clash swords to win the hand of beautiful maidens, as well as archery demonstrations and fighting with large sticks
  • The ever-popular Punch and Judy show
  • Stalls aplenty from which you can purchase anything and everything medieval
  • Daily costume competitions.

Of course the day would not be complete without a full array of sumptuous food and beverages to tempt passer-by’s of all ages. And adults are not forgotten either with mead tasting sure to attract a great deal of attention, and plenty of wine, beer and soft drinks on hand.-11875372137875F7A7

If you plan to head along, why not dress up and join in the fun? Pop across to the organisation’s website (http://medievalsa.org/ ) and check out the fantastic costumes worn by many on the day. And yes, if you wish you can buy fabulous costumes at the fair and ‘dress like a local.’

The even-17280532185F7A2762t is held in the town’s grass-covered park so parents of very young children might want to bring a stroller with decent wheels that can handle the grass and dirt. If the weather is warm, you might want to wear hats and have a bottle of water with you (though as mentioned, plenty of refreshments can also be purchased). Parking is available on and off-street (it is free on the street but may require a bit of a walk, while there is a small fee for off-street parking). Toilets are available in the park. General seating is limited, so a picnic rug may save you sitting on the grass to eat some lunch or catch your breath. And don’t forget to take your camera!-350051805F7A2762

Admission prices apply but are well worth the cost. One day prices for adults are $15, children under 5 are free while those over are $5, a family of 2 adults/3 children are $30, while concession holders and students are $10.
